A Gwinnett County man shot during an overnight home invasion was able to drive for help with a bullet lodged in his head.

The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Thursday at the Oakbrook Pointe apartments in the 1500 block of Oakbrook Drive near Norcross, according to Gwinnett police Cpl. Jake Smith.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was shot once in the head after answering a knock on his door.

"He fell to the ground and remained there injured while the suspect or suspects entered the home and ransacked it," Smith told AM 750 and now 95.5 FM News/Talk WSB. "We are treating it as a home invasion robbery and attempted homicide as well."

After being shot, the victim drove to a friend's house nearby and called police from there.

Smith said the victim was in critical condition around 6 p.m. Thursday.
