An early morning house fire near downtown Duluth caused a road closure Tuesday, according to Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services.

Residents of a home on Dogwood Street called 911 at 3:40 a.m. to report a fire in their basement. All residents — five adults and one child — evacuated without injury, the fire department said. The home was “engulfed in flames” when firefighters arrived, according to a department release.

The main level floor collapsed into the basement, and firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze from the outside. While the house is still standing, it was declared “unstable” and unsafe to occupy, according to a department release.

As of 7:21 a.m., the scene was still active, with crews working to extinguish hot spots. The department requested a truck to take down unstable walls at the house to ensure the fire is completely extinguished and prevent further collapse. Dogwood Street was closed and has not yet re-opened.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and is still under investigation.
