The Lilburn Police Department is warning city residents of a fake IRS scam.
The department has heard increased reports of people receiving calls from someone claiming to be from the IRS. The caller says there is an arrest warrant out for the person because of unpaid taxes and demands money so the warrant will be dismissed.
The caller instructs the victim to send thousands of dollars in gift cards; if that is done, it’s almost impossible to get your money back, the department said in a Facebook post.
The IRS will never call you to request personal or financial information, and they only use paper mail to communicate about delinquent payments. The Lilburn Police Department warned residents to ask for a name and a callback number if they receive a call like this, and give that information to the police.
