A Gwinnett County man has been convicted of repeatedly raping a girl over the course of six years, starting when she was 12 years old.

Jimmy Lee Jones, 50, was convicted of rape and child molestation on Nov. 29 after a three-day trial. The jury deliberated for only 25 minutes before returning a guilty verdict on both charges.

Jones began abusing the victim in 2009, when he came into her room in the middle of the night and raped her, the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office said in a release. The next morning Jones told her not to say anything about what happened, the DA’s office said.

The abuse continued for six years, the DA’s office said. The victim went to the doctor in 2015 for a routine checkup and learned that she had a sexually transmitted disease. When the victim’s mother asked her how she contracted the disease, the victim told her mother about the ongoing abuse from Jones.

Jones denied raping the victim when the victim’s mother asked. Jones tested positive for the same STD after he was arrested.

Jones was sentenced to 50 years in prison and lifetime probation.
