Gwinnett man arrested for child molestation

A Gwinnett County man remained jailed without bond Friday after being arrested for allegedly molesting two family members.

The alleged victims, sisters who are now in their teens, told police that they were molested by their uncle, Robert Wayne Cates, numerous times beginning in 1999, according to a Gwinnett police incident report.

Police began investigating the claims in late April, and Cates, who works as a night custodian at Parkview High School, was arrested on Wednesday.

Cates, 57, was charged with multiple counts of sexual battery, aggravated sexual battery and child molestation.

According to the police report, the victims told police that they were molested while spending the night at Cates’ house on High Sierra Court in Lawrenceville.

Gwinnett County Public Schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach told the Gwinnett Daily Post that Cates had been employed by the school system since 1987, and had worked at Parkview since 2008.
