A Gwinnett County jail inmate has been charged with trying to hire a hit man.
Richard Allen Fowler, 55, allegedly offered to pay $4,500 to the "hit man" -- actually an undercover Gwinnett County deputy -- to kill a woman, a Gwinnett sheriff's official said.
Fowler, of Norcross, allegedly told the deputy he wanted the woman killed because she had caused him problems.
"An undercover Gwinnett sheriff’s deputy posed as a person who could be hired to commit murder," Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Stacey Bourbonnais said. "Mr. Fowler met with the undercover deputy and offered him money to kill the female. He offered other information on where she could be located and places she might frequent."
Fowler was charged with criminal attempt to commit a crime and criminal solicitation, both felonies. He is being held without bond at the Gwinnett jail.
Fowler had been jailed for terroristic threats and criminal trespass and was awaiting transfer to a state facility.
Bourbonnais said the intended victim was notified of Fowler's intentions to hire a hit man so she could take precautions.
