A Lilburn teenager woke up shortly before 4 a.m., smelling smoke. Fire alarms in the home on Blackspruce Court had not sounded, but the teen woke the rest of the family up and they fled the house, according to Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services.

The fire started in the attic above the garage, near the teen’s bedroom, and spread to the garage and the attic above the main house. The cause is undetermined and still under investigation.

Before firefighters arrived, the father tried unsuccessfully to douse the flames coming from the garage with a garden hose. Firefighters contained the blaze by 4:21 a.m.

The family and their three cats were displaced, but nobody was injured. The family turned down assistance from the American Red Cross and will stay with relatives nearby until their home is repaired.
