Amber Simmons is one of the best high school English teachers in the country, the National Council of Teachers of English said.

The Brookwood High School teacher was one of 15 teachers from across the U.S. to receive the High School Teacher of Excellence Award from the group, Gwinnett County Public Schools announced. She’s the only teacher in Georgia to be honored this year.

Simmons was also named the High School Teacher of the Year this spring by the Georgia Council of Teachers of English.

“As an educator she has a true impact on students, their families and our community,” said Brookwood Principal Bo Ford in a district release. “While she works very hard at building a relationship with her students through the study of literature and language, she works equally as hard at having students build stronger relationships with their families and/or other adults who care about them.”

Simmons will receive the award in November at the National Council of Teachers of English conference in St. Louis.
