A former Gwinnett County sheriff’s deputy was arrested Wednesday on sexual assault charges involving a prisoner in the jail.

Lisa Ziglar, 45, was booked into the jail after a grand jury indicted her under a law making it a felony for a deputy to have consensual sexual relations with an inmate, Deputy Shannon Volkodav said in an email.

Ziglar is being held without bond. She had been on administrative leave since the sheriff’s office began its investigation Feb. 2 after receiving a tip about the alleged misconduct, Volkodav said.

“The results of our investigation indicated that Deputy Ziglar had participated in a consensual, but illegal, sexual relationship with an inmate that included intimate touching,” Volkodav wrote. “Ms. Ziglar’s employment was terminated and the investigative findings were submitted to the district attorney’s office for prosecution.”

Volkodav did not go into detail about the investigation or say when it concluded. She referred further questions to the district attorney’s office.

This is second case in the last month to involve improper sexual relationships between employees or contractors of the Gwinnett sheriff's office and inmates in the jail. A nurse working at the jail was charged earlier this month on charges she had an illegal sexual relationship with an inmate.

Cheryl Lynn Bates, 44, scheduled “multiple medical procedures” to engage in sex with the inmate between Sept. 1 and Oct. 7, according to an arrest warrant.

This isn’t Ziglar’s first brush with the legal system on the wrong side of the law, according to the Gwinnett courts website. A woman swore out a family violence warrant against her in 2002 and another woman swore out a family violence warrant against Ziglar in 2007.

Ziglar also took a family violence warrant against that same woman in 2007.
