Gwinnett cop believes gunshots may have been fired at his car

July 20, 2016

A Gwinnett County police officer believes a passerby may have fired shots at his squad car early Monday morning — but with no real leads and no evidence, there's not much investigation to be done, a department spokesman said.

According to an incident report, the officer pulled over on Ga. 316 eastbound near Sugarloaf Parkway around 12:20 a.m. While he was calling a victim in an unrelated incident, another vehicle drove by in the westbound lanes.

"As the vehicle got parallel with mine underneath the bridge, I heard 3 loud 'pops' that I recognized as gunshots," the officer wrote in his report.

The vehicle drove on and the officer went to a nearby precinct to inspect his squad car. Finding no damage, he returned to the scene.

He spoke with a driver who had broken down in the area, and that man said he'd heard the possible gunshots, too — but the officer did not find any shell casings or "any marking on the concrete to indicate that a bullet may have struck it."

The only description of the suspect vehicle was a small, "possibly red" passenger car.

A Gwinnett County police spokesman confirmed Wednesday that there were no leads in the case but declined to comment further.
