Nearly 14,000 Gwinnett County commercial property value notices were mailed to the wrong owners Friday, forcing the county to send corrected notices next week.

The vendor responsible for the error -- Dove Mailing of Atlanta -- will pay for the second mailing, set for April 6. The company also will pay to mail postcards this week alerting property owners about the error.

In the meantime, Gwinnett officials are asking property owners to disregard the notices mailed Friday.

“On behalf of Gwinnett County and the Board of Tax Assessors, I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this error may cause,” county Tax Assessor Steve Pruitt said in a statement announcing the error.

Each year county governments mail a “notice of current assessment” to property owners stating the assessed value of their property for tax purposes. Gwinnett contracted with Dove Mailing to do the work, and the company mailed 13,944 notices to commercial property owners Friday.

Because of a production error, the company sent the notices to the wrong owners. County officials say no private information -- such as Social Security numbers -- are included in the notices. They contain only public information about a property -- such as the address and assessed value.

The delay in delivering assessment notices has pushed back the last day to appeal commercial assessment values from May 9 to May 23.

“The county and the printing company recognize the seriousness of this error, and they are working hard to make it right for all affected by the effort,” Pruitt said.

Commercial property owners who want to view their assessment notice before receiving it can go to www.gwinnett-assessor.com.

The mistake affects only commercial property owners. Assessment notices for residential properties are set to be mailed April 15.
