Duluth has been named one of the five best places to live for under $40,000 a year by AARP The Magazine.

The magazine is produced by the AARP, a leading interest group for American seniors and retirees. The list includes suburbs in Texas, Missouri, New York and Oregon alongside Duluth, cited in part for its proximity to Atlanta.

Duluth is described by the magazine as having a “symphony of cultures — blending backgrounds, generations, cuisines, diversions and musical tastes.” Duluth is home to a wide variety of immigrant communities from Asian and South and Central American countries.

Duluth is also home to lauded and well-loved restaurants. Ri Liu, chef of Chinese restaurant Masterpiece in Duluth, was a semifinalist for the prestigious James Beard Award in 2018. O4W Pizza, which started in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, moved to downtown Duluth in 2016.

The magazine also notes Duluth’s number of sunny days per year — 218 — and Georgia’s lack of state tax on Social Security benefits as positive aspects.
