A 4-year-old boy died Friday after he was found unresponsive in an apartment swimming pool in Duluth, Gwinnett police said Friday night.

The child wandered out of his apartment and was discovered face down in the pool, Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Tommy Rutledge said in a news release. The child had been inside with his mother, uncle and several other children.

Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services said in a news release that they responded to a pediatric drowning call about 4:20 p.m. at the complex pool at Landmark at Bella Vista Apartments, off Satellite Boulevard. They found the child unconscious and unresponsive.

The child was pulled from the water, and CPR already was in progress by a man described as the child’s uncle and a female bystander, according to the Gwinnett fire news release.

Firefighter paramedics continued advanced life-support measures and transported the child to Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth.

The child’s name has not been released.

“This is a truly tragic event for the family as well as the community,” Gwinnett police Cpl. Michelle Pihera said Friday in an email to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Many children love swimming pools and other bodies of water. No matter their swimming abilities, all children should be encouraged to never swim alone.”
