A 12-year-old from Duluth was killed while trying to cross Pleasant Hill Road on Tuesday evening, Gwinnett County police said.

Gianni Salazar was walking across Pleasant Hill Road near Woodberry Drive around 7 p.m. when he was hit by three vehicles. Salazar was not walking in a crosswalk, police said.

The drivers of the three cars remained at the scene and are not facing any criminal charges, police said. The lack of charges are due in part to Salazar not using the crosswalk, said Cpl. Michele Pihera, a department spokeswoman.

“They had no expectation that a pedestrian would be trying to cross,” Pihera said. “And, they all stayed at the scene.”

If any of the drivers had not remained at the scene, they could have been charged with hit-and-run.

Salazar was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite Hospital with “serious injuries” shortly after the accident and died at the hospital.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” Pihera said.
