Grease blamed for 3,600-gallon Gwinnett sewage spill

June 21, 2016

Grease was to blame for 3,600 gallons of sewage spilling into a Gwinnett County stream Monday morning, officials said.

According to the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources, the spill was reported around 10:30 a.m. at a manhole on the 3500 block of Duluth's Howell Ferry Road, not far from the intersection of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road. The overflow was stopped around 1:15 p.m.

"The main cause was determined to be grease, with rags and other 'flushables' as a secondary cause," officials said. The spill flowed into "an unnamed tributary of the Chattahoochee River."

Water resources workers raked the area, spread lime and notified the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.
