UPDATE: The cafeteria passed its Dec. 21 re-inspection with a 90/A. According to the report, an inspector observed "improper food storage, again."

The report also noted that the floor is still in disrepair — but it is to “be repaired during (the) next phase of renovation.”

ORIGINAL STORY (published Dec. 15): Hospitals are expected to be sterile, but a health inspector found that wasn't exactly the case during a recent visit to Grady Hospital's main cafeteria.

The cafeteria failed its health inspection, with officials noting that the dishwasher was “not sanitizing.” The sanitizing chemical was connected to the machine, but not dispensing, the report said.

The hospital's eatery, located at 80 Jesse Hill Jr. Drive, scored a 47 following the evaluation. Its prior score, from April, was a 100.

According to the report, there was improper food storage, including raw shrimp stored over ready-to-eat foods.

Officials also reported sinks without hot water and various shelves, fan covers and ceiling vent covers that “must be cleaned.”

The chef told the inspector that the facility has been under construction for a few weeks.

The inspector noted: “It is apparent that this renovation, in the manner executed, leaves very small suitable storage, prep and cooking space to meet all rules. However, facility still must meet minimum safety requirements.”

Grady “prides itself on getting top grades from the Department of Public Health,” administration said in a statement to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“We take this isolated case very seriously and the outside vendor that manages our cafeteria has already made personnel changes to correct the problem,” the email said. “We will return to the high standards we set for ourselves before the inspector returns in a few days.”

Follow-up inspections are generally completed within 10 days of the original evaluation.
