Decatur’s commission recently approved a utility easement for a Google Fiber Hut adjacent to the Ebster Pool pump house near the police department building.

Last January Google Fiber announced plans that it was bringing its service to nine metro-area cities including Decatur and Avondale Estates. According to the company website, Google Fiber offers 1,000 megabits per second compared to the current U.S. average of 11.5 megabits per second.

The hut is 30-feet by 10-feet and serves about 20,000 homes. Each hut feeds into smaller cabinets, which feed into individual homes connecting them to Google’s gigabit broadband via fiber cables.

The company said it might be up to two years before subscriber service is available. But Lena Stevens, the city’s resource conservation coordinator, said she hasn’t received an updated timeline, either for constructing the hut or the beginning of service.
