Volunteers invited to plant trees on MLK Day

Trees Atlanta is offering local youth and adults an opportunity to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a Day of Service. Hundreds of volunteers will join together for “A Day On Not a Day Off.” The tree plantings will provide community beautification at three different locations. Sponsors also include KPMG Atlanta, HOA Family Group, Sankofa Counseling Center, YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta and Georgia Tech Office of Leadership & Civic Engagement.

When: 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Jan. 18

Where: Adair Park, Maryland Avenue and Catherine Street; Hahn Woods, 890 Houston Mill Road NE and Southview Cemetery, 1990 Jonesboro Rd SE.

Register for Volunteen program at DeKalb Medical

DeKalb Medical is accepting applications for its Summer Volunteen Program through Feb. 29. Registration is open to 14- to 18-year-olds with at least one year of high school course work completed. About 20 new teens are accepted into the program each year.

The DeKalb Medical Volunteen program allows students to assist hospital staff in various departments throughout the organization’s campuses. The students also participate in Lunch-and-Learn events with medical professionals to learn about various jobs in the healthcare field.
