Volunteers needed for ‘It Starts in the Parks’ 5K race

Brookhaven’s Parks & Recreation Department is hosting its first 5K, “It Starts in the Parks.” The department is seeking volunteers to help check in pre-registered participants, take registration/money for people signing up on-site, man the corner of a small side street intersection while racers pass by, man a water table during the race, pass out shirts and give out awards post-race.

When: 6:15 to 9:30 a.m. July 18

Where: Blackburn Park, 3493 Ashford Dunwoody Road.

Elementary school to get improvements

Georgia United Credit Union is seeking volunteers to help with the Woodward Elementary School Crashers makeover.

The Title 1 school was built in 1958 and is in need of improvements like building and grounds renovations - to enhance the learning environment for Woodward’s 1,030 students and 100 faculty and staff. Woodward Elementary was chosen from hundreds of nominations from schools across the state, to receive a Georgia United’s 2015 School Crashers grand prize.

The project needs people with skills in painting, landscaping or construction as wll as crew leaders. Bi-lingual volunteers are especially needed as many of the volunteer parents will be Hispanic.

When: July 17 and 18
