Clayton County waterway needs clean-up help

The Clayton County Water Authority is hosting its semi-annual waterway clean-up. Rivers Alive is an opportunity for residents to work together to clean trash, litter and other debris from a local river or creek. This year’s event will take place around Hurricane Creek.

“This event is great for scout troops, environmental clubs, church groups and families. The volunteers learn the importance of keeping our local waterways clean and they have fun,” says CCWA Water Resources Engineer Shayla Nealy.

Volunteers should wear outdoor clothing and waterproof boots. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. After a safety briefing, volunteers will spend about an hour cleaning up around Hurricane Creek. Following the cleanup, volunteers will enjoy a hot dog lunch prepared by members of the Jonesboro Kiwanis Club.

Clayton County’s event is part of the state-wide Rivers Alive volunteer cleanup event that targets all waterways in the state of Georgia, including streams, rivers, lakes, beaches and wetlands.

Theater seeks ushers, concession help

Over the River and Through the Woods is a new play at the Downtown Canton Theatre directed by Ed Palombo. The plot involves Nick, a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey. His parents retired and moved to Florida. That doesn’t mean his family isn’t still in Jersey. In fact, he sees both sets of his grandparents every Sunday for dinner. This is routine until he has to tell them that he’s been offered a dream job. The job he’s been waiting for—marketing executive—would take him away from his beloved, but annoying, grandparents. He tells them. The news doesn’t sit so well. Thus begins a series of schemes to keep Nick around.

Organizers need ushers and concession help for the performances that run Nov. 3 - 12. Dress is black and white business casual. Volunteers will need to arrive an hour before performances.

When: 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 2:30 p.m. Sundays, November 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12

Where: Downtown Canton Theatre, 171 East Main Street, Canton

Help four-legged residents

Furkids offers many opportunities. Atlanta’s largest no-kill animal shelter, Furkids is one of the only shelters in Georgia that welcomes children of all ages to volunteer at its locations in Doraville, Norcross, Alpharetta and throughout Atlanta.

Kids of all ages and their families can provide temporary homes for dogs and cats. If that’s not an option, consider fund-raising efforts, such as dog washes or lemonade stands, to raise money for the shelter. Other hands-on opportunities are available.
