Central Presbyterian Church seeks help for shelter
Central Presbyterian Church, an historic church located in downtown Atlanta has reopened the Central Night Shelter for the winter. It is a seasonal shelter for homeless men in the downtown Atlanta area during the
months of November through March. Together with the Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the two
churches can accommodate up to 100 guests with Central housing the majority at 70.
For more than 30 years Central Presbyterian Church has provided lodging space and amenities for this local
mission, the only Atlanta shelter completely operated and supported by volunteers.
The shelter not only provides nightly accommodations, but also offers three daily meals, shower facilities, and a foot and medical clinic. Guests of the shelter also have the opportunity to participate in activities such as
basketball, choir, yoga, and art therapy during their stay.
According to Ana Bailie, a CNS Volunteer Coordinator, the shelter volunteers are there to focus on hospitality.
“Volunteers may invite guests to their home for dinner - a place to meet the men where they are not being
evangelical.” said Bailie. “That said, as our volunteers get to know the men throughout the winter, they realize
which ones may be able to change their lives. So volunteers on their own will help the men get a job or refer
them to other programs.”
