A 9-year-old Cherokee County girl who was critically injured on New Year's Eve when she was kicked in the head by a mule remains in the hospital.

Her family’s attorney released a statement Saturday thanking well-wishers for their thoughts and prayers as Emma Johnson recovers from the injuries she sustained in a “devastating accident.”

Emma was kicked and knocked unconscious Tuesday while she and her mother were trying to lure two wayward mules into a neighbor’s pasture on Green Drive near Canton, investigators said.

She was flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. In the statement, the family thanked the hospital staff “for the round-the-clock care and service they have provided since Emma was flown in.”

The family asked that those wishing to help do so by donating to the hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

The owner of the mules will not face criminal charges, the Cherokee County Marshal's Office previously said. Investigators believe rain may have washed away part of a fence, which allowed the mules to escape.
