Avondale Estates’ Acting Mayor Terry Giager will not run for mayor after all, with architect Paul Brown, a member of the city’s Board of Appeals, becoming the first person to qualify for the position Monday.
Giager told the AJC last week he was considering qualifying if no one else stepped forward. But if he qualified now, and ran against Brown and anyone else who qualifies, he’d have to leave the Board of Mayor and Commissioners for the next two months—the special election for mayor is March 17.
“If I had been the only person qualifying,” Giager said, “I could’ve stayed on the board. But now the point’s moot.” Giager has been on the board since Jan. 2010, and has been acting mayor since the resignation of Ed Rieker last October.
Qualifying for the election continues until the end of this week.
