The work of merging eight colleges into four is proceeding on schedule, University System of Georgia officials said Tuesday.

The state Board of Regents is scheduled to vote on new mission statements for the consolidated schools in May, Associate Vice Chancellor Shelley Nickel said. Recommendations on new names for the schools will come this summer, she said.

The system is merging Augusta State University with Georgia Health Sciences University; Gainesville State College with North Georgia College & State University; Middle Georgia College with Macon State College; and Waycross College with South Georgia College.

The mergers will save money on administrative costs, and the system plans to redirect those savings toward improving and expanding academic programs, Chancellor Hank Huckaby has said.

Huckaby has not said how much would be saved or how many jobs may be cut.

The consolidations are scheduled to be done by the start of the 2013-14 academic year.
