After another freeway sign typo was corrected, the Georgia Department of Transportation wants people to know that it feels like its spelling record is pretty good.
“We have tens of thousands of signs throughout the state [at least],” GDOT spokeswoman Natalie Dale said Tuesday in an email to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Text must be typed in by hand.
“It is simple human error. In these few incidents, the sign was/is corrected by the contractor at no cost to the state or the taxpayer.”
Workers Tuesday morning corrected a sign on the Downtown Connector that had an incorrect spelling of Philips Arena, home of the Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Dream and one of the city's biggest entertainment venue. (Philips had an extra l.) The erroneous spelling had been on the sign for more than a year.
It was the third such incident in metro Atlanta since 2014.
Previously, a sign on the Connector directing motorists to the Georgia Aquarium had a spelling of “A-Q-U-A-I-R-I-U-M.” Also, “Gwinnett” was misspelled on a sign along Highway 316.
