A traffic shift on a busily traveled thoroughfare in Cartersville is planned for Tuesday, June 12, as part of the reconstruction of the U.S. 41 bridge over Pettit Creek, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced.

The shift will affect U.S. 41, a four-lane divided highway at this location, between Massell Drive SE and Evans Hightower Road. Northbound traffic will move onto temporary lanes at Pettit Creek, and southbound traffic will move over to the northbound lanes, to accommodate the demolition of the southbound bridge, GDOT says.

The plan, subject to change, is for the shift is to start at 9 a.m. Tuesday, be removed at 4 p.m., and turn into a detour between 7 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday, June 13. Traffic is expected to return to its normal configuration by 9 a.m.

The bridge work is part of a widening and reconstruction of a little over a mile of U.S. 41/Ga. 3. The $31.5 million project also will see bridges constructed over the CSX railroad tracks and U.S. 411. The work is to be completed by February 2020.
