The widening of Cumming Highway (Ga. 20) from two to six lanes on Canton’s east side has been approved for bid-letting in March, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced.

The state-funded project, estimated to cost $25.8 million, will extend for about one mile through a busy commercial area near Northside Hospital-Cherokee, the largest employer in Cherokee County. The project begins 0.3 miles east of I-575 and ends just east of Scott Road. Plans call for a six-lane road with a 20-foot raised median.

“This widening project provides much-needed capacity relief for east-west connectivity in an area that has seen huge population growth over the last 10 years,” said state Sen. Brandon Beach (R-Alpharetta), chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee. “In addition, the raised median is an added safety measure to reduce potential crashes.”
