The GBI on Sunday accepted a request by the College Park Police Department to investigate an officer-involved shooting on Old National Highway.

In a statement, the GBI said preliminary information indicates that four College Park officers saw a man driving a tractor trailer in an unsafe manner and ordered the driver to stop. The driver refused and then pointed his truck in the direction of the officers, who then fired shots at the semi, striking its tires and engine, the GBI said.

The driver, identified as 46-year-old Yahya Nalm Shakur, was not struck by the gunfire. When officers used a Taser when trying to remove him from the truck, he continued to be non-compliant, the GBI said.

Shakur was then arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, reckless conduct, reckless driving, obstruction and driving under the influence. No officers — none of whom was identified — were injured during the incident.

The GBI will conduct its investigation of the incident and then turn over its findings to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for any action prosecutors deem appropriate, the GBI said.
