During 2017, the Gatweay85 Community Improvement District (CID) updated its Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) study on Indian Trail-Lilburn Road, which included a list of transportation projects aimed at improving mobility in the study area.

The CID has selected a project from the LCI for additional study and design. The project, a reconfiguration of northbound access to Interstate 85 from Indian Trail-Lilburn Road, will help to decrease congestion on Indian Trail-Lilburn Road during peak periods. In addition, it will increase safety by eliminating illegal right-turns from the existing through lane.

The CID has contracted with Kimley Horn to create concept-level plans for the project. These plans will explore design alternatives at a more detailed level than the LCI, including examining the feasibility of an update to the interchange. In addition, concepts will be developed for improvements to the intersection of Indian Trail-Lilburn Road at Willow Trail Parkway.
