After hitting the $4 a gallon mark for the first time in two-and-a-half years last week, the average price of a gallon of gas in metro Atlanta started the week Monday down a few cents at $3.98.

While that’s the average price reported Monday by atlantagasprices.com, the actual price varied widely, from a low of $3.69 at a couple of truck stops along I-75 north of Cartersville to a high of $4.29 at a handful of downtown gas station.

In Gwinnett County, a couple of stations in Buford were selling regular unleaded for $3.79, the same price as at a few stations in Morrow, Jonesboro and Stockbridge on the southside.

Monday’s average was a nickel a gallon higher than the national average reported by the website and 9 cents a gallon more expensive than Atlantans were paying just one week ago and 27 cents higher than on April 16.

The state average on Monday was $3.95 a gallon.
