A funeral is scheduled Thursday afternoon for a Peachtree City girl who drowned on the Chattahoochee River last week.

Anna Van Horn, 9, was tubing Friday with two adults and three other children when she apparently got caught in a water release from Buford Dam, authorities said. Anna had been under water for more than an hour when rescuers spotted her life preserver, according to Capt. Jason Shivers of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

She  was transported to Northside Hospital-Forsyth, where she was later pronounced dead.

A statement on behalf of her parents, Norm and Karen Van Horn, was released Thursday, describing Anna as "a wonderful daughter who cared deeply about animals and the environment. The Van Horns thank all those who searched for Anna and who tried to revive her."

Her obituary described her as a "very beautiful and intelligent girl with an ‘old soul.'" It said she enjoyed animals, art, music and riding horses. She attended Braelinn Elementary School in Peachtree City, where she participated in the "Green Team."

Services were scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church Peachtree City. A second service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Swainsboro.
