Citing a desire to reopen Tyrone Elementary School “in the near future,” the Fayette County Board of Education has approved $274,962 in funding to connect the building to Tyrone’s sewer system.

The vote at Tuesday’s regular board meeting was part of an intergovernmental agreement with the town of Tyrone, even though the school system owns the property at 876 Senoia Road. Tyrone Elementary was one of three Fayette schools that were closed in 2013 due to budget cuts, but it had been plagued by septic system problems for years. The school’s new sewer hookup will be part of an expansion of sewer services elsewhere in Tyrone.

The county will pay for the school project in three installments, starting 30 days after the work begins. A complete timeline for the project has not been announced, nor have details regarding future use of the school.
