Fayette County has approved funding to replace two of its fire stations.

The Board of Commissioners voted 5-0 on March 14 to award a $2.35 million contract to BM&K Construction & Engineering to build a two-bay station to replace Fire Station 2 on Ga. Hwy. 92 North. A bid for $2.57 million was granted to Astra Group, Inc. to construct a new three-bay Station 4 (previously located on Johnson Avenue) at the corner of McDonough Road and McElroy Road, the former site of the county’s Division of Motor Vehicles office. Budget amendments were required for each project — $25,000 for Station 2 because of architectural and related expenditures, and $1.15 million for Station 4 because of site preparation caused by a change in location.

The latter is a 2017 SPLOST project originally budgeted at $2.4 million. County Administrator Steve Rapson said the county prefers to use the same vendor for similar projects, but in this case saved $43,000 by using different companies.
