Following the unexpected early retirement of a Peachtree City police dog, a group of residents has launched a fundraising drive to replace him. The City Council approved the plan, announced by Police Chief Janet Moon, on Nov. 17.

K-9 Maik was taken off duty recently because of hip problems that made him unable to continue working. The city has another dog, Midas, but has relied on having two dogs for searches, tracking, drug detection and pursuits. Each K-9 costs $17,000, including training for the dog and handler, but the city had not budgeted for that until 2018.

The drive, which has already raised more than $400, is at www.GoFundMe.com under Paws for Peachtree City.
