The Fulton County Board of Education appears poised to change its recess policy.

The board approved on first reading at its December meeting a policy change saying participation in recess can’t be withheld for disciplinary or behavioral reasons. Spokeswoman Susan Hale said the proposed change is now available for public review and will come back for a final vote next month.

Hale said school officials don’t have widespread knowledge that recess has been withheld and that the claification is simply meant to clear up situations that may have been vague. A district spokeswoman said the matter came up as part of a regular, several-year cycle of reviewing policies.

Atlanta school board members approved a similar policy change in November.
