Fulton County Government Building in shambles

The Fulton County Government Center, at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Pryor Street in downtown Atlanta, was mockingly dubbed the "Taj Mahal" when it was first built due to its ornate features.

Problems with the Fulton County Government Center have been building for years. In this 2005 photo, the pool and fountain in front of the center are an algae green because of irregular maintenance.

When the government center was built, the atrium featured palm trees, which became a symbol of government waste. Former Chairman Mitch Skandalakis had them cut down when he took office, saying the yearly maintenance cost was more than the cost of removing them.

Problems with the building are nothing new and have been getting worse over the years. In this 2005 photo, a plastic tarp collects dripping water.
