Fulton County cities are preparing to raise money to fix its streets. Fulton County Chairman John Eaves and the mayors of 13 cities signed an intergovernmental agreement last week to initiate a referendum that would allow voters to consider a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for Transportation.

Fulton County residents outside Atlanta would consider a 0.75 percent sales tax that would authorize transportation projects like roads, bridges, sidewalks, traffic signals, and rail road silent crossings. Each Fulton County city could select projects that are important to that community.

Voters in Atlanta will consider two different sales taxes. One would be 0.5 percent and would be designated for MARTA and transit in general and the other 0.5 percent sales tax would be allocated for transportation projects for a total of 1 cent in the city of Atlanta. The Fulton County Board of Commissioners will meet on Aug. 8 to formally call for the item to be placed on the Nov. 8 ballot.
