Clayton County police discovered human remains in an abandoned car on Mount Zion Road in Jonesboro near the Woods of Southlake apartments Saturday.
The remains were found after a neighbor reported a "foul smell" coming from the vehicle.
"Officers came out and they were able to confirm there was a foul odor coming from the car in addition to a fluid leaking from the rear of the vehicle," said police spokesman Lt. Tina Daniel, who was at the crime scene.
While authorities did not release details, Daniel said police have identified the owner of the car but have not confirmed the identity of the dead individual and would not release that information until the next of kin is notified. Daniel said the vehicle did not belong to a resident of the nearby Woods of Southlake apartments.
Police had obtained a search warrant to open the vehicle, which Daniel said appeared to be abandoned.
