The Forsyth County Board of Education approved a controversial school redistricting plan for the 2018-19 school year aimed at populating Denmark High School opening in August and reducing overcrowding at several other campuses.
Before the vote school board members heard from several speakers objecting to the plan, including two rising juniors who contended that transferring to Denmark would interrupt the academic progress, relationship—building and extracurricular involvement they’ve achieved at their existing campuses.
The final decision plucks students from Lambert, South and West High schools and aims to have Denmark open with roughly 1700 students.
The decision came despite a lawsuit filed by parents who said their children would pass by two other high schools on their way to Denmark. They ‘re upset that other communities closer to Denmark weren’t redistricted. They also claimed that the committee that considered the redistricting issue met secretly and didn’t keep notes of those meetings.
School board members and school officials defended the process as transparent and said all voices were heard. They also said redistricting guidelines haven’t changed since 2008.
