Work reopening a stretch of Forsyth County roadway closed by a dam breach has been delayed again by a combination of wet winter weather and high lake levels.

Sanders Road between Mary Alice Park and Buford Dam roads near Lake Lanier has been closed to through traffic since the Lake Mary Alice dam collapsed in May 2013, undermining the road and destroying a culvert.

Cumming Planning and Zoning Director Scott Morgan said crews hope to install a replacement culvert this week then rebuild the road. He said the contractor has been given another extension to the end of March.

Morgan said high lake levels from winter rains have also delayed a related project to remove sediment from the dam breach which ran down a creek into Lake Lanier’s Little Ridge Cove. He said crews also hope to finish that project by March’s end as lake levels have dropped.
