Operations have begun at the new Forsyth County jail. The old detention center has closed, according to Forsyth County Sheriffs Office. All inmates were transferred without any problems.

Forsyth County voters approved a SPLOST November 2011, with the jail, a new county courthouse and nearby parking facilities all part of that package. Construction began July 2013 and while the new courthouse opened in March, the opening of the jail was pushed back a number of times as training and other logistical issues were dealt with.

Sheriff’s officials said the old detention center opened in 1976 with a capacity of 72 inmates, and while it was expanded twice to 227 bunks. it eventually became outmoded.. The new detention center is considerably larger and features a number of technological advances aimed at greater security, they said.

The new jail will have the same address, 202 Veterans Boulevard. The detention center will also house an office where residents can pick up accident and incident reports. The records office will be open 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
