Forsyth County Manager Doug Derrer has announced his retirement after nine years as a senior county officer and 40 years total in public service. His last day with Forsyth will be April 2.

Saying his work with the Board of Commissioners, county employees and community has been “extremely rewarding” with “many successes,” Derrer added, “The most difficult part of this decision will be leaving behind a well-trained, dedicated and professional staff – a team built for a strong and successful tomorrow.”

The process for filling Derrer’s position has not yet been determined.

Derrer joined Forsyth as deputy county manager in February 2008. He was named interim county manager that September and county manager in March 2009.

Previously, Derrer was public works and public safety director in Hall County, warden at the Hall County Correctional Institution, city manager of Flowery Branch and a police officer for Miami-Dade County, Fla. He has bachelor’s degrees in public administration and criminal justice.
