More security will be put in place at Forsyth County’s 13 fire stations after a recent series of break-ins involving firefighter vehicles.

Commissioners authorized spending up to $300,000 from fire fund reserves for enhanced security measures that would include high-resolution security cameras, enhanced exterior lighting, key-card security and some security fencing. Fire Chief Danny Bowman pushed for the improvements that were suggested by a security expert. Bowman said if the problems continue, it might be necessary to formally engage a security consultant.

Since January, a series of burglaries has plagued firefighters’ vehicles at stations across north Metro Atlanta, with firearms and other items taken. Most recently, vehicles at several Forsyth stations were targeted, along with those in two other communities.
