City officials in Hampton are moving forward with the renovation of the old Fortson Library building into a community center.

The City Council voted Oct. 10 approve a contract for about $200,000 in repair work on the facility, and it is expected to take four month to complete the job. The building has been vacant since the new library building opened in the fall of 2010, resulting in a number of minor structural issues and some mold that must be addressed. Restrooms will be brought up to ADA specifications and some improvements are planned for the kitchen as well as other area that need to be brought up to code.

Several civic and community groups have already expressed interest in using the facility as a meeting place once it is available.
