A former professor at Georgia’s only public medical college won a national award for excellence in medical education, officials announced this week.
Ruth-Marie “Rhee” Fincher, the inaugural vice dean for academic affairs for the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta, received the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Abraham Flexner Award for Distinguished Service to Medical Education.
Fincher, who retired in May, is the first Georgian and the first woman to receive the award.
University officials credited her with starting a model of medical education that allows students to learn alongside physicians across the state. This allowed the college to expand its medical school class and address the state’s doctor shortage.
