A vacant downtown building that once housed a bar named Club Inferno was heavily damaged by a two-alarm fire early Wednesday.

When firefighters arrived at the now-vacant one-story building in the 300 block of Marietta Street just before 5 a.m., they found heavy fire coming through the roof, Atlanta fire Battalion Chief Paul Cuprowski told the AJC.

Fire crews were able to contain the flames to the original building, which backs up to the Georgia Aquarium’s property.

“These buildings are hard to contain once they get going because there are so many additions and add-ons over the years and there are so many void spaces in there, and that’s what makes them so difficult,” Cuprowski said.

He said the cause of the fire had not been determined.

"The property manager said they were having some work done yesterday,” Cuprowski said.

No injuries were reported.
