Former Bastrop school district sixth-grade teacher Arthur Reyes, 61, of Bastrop, was sentenced to 15 years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to two charges of aggravated sexual assault.
The sentencing is coming almost two years after Reyes’ Aug. 2012 arrest by Bastrop County sheriff’s deputies after one of Reyes’s sixth-grade students revealed to relatives that he had been sexually assaulted by Reyes, according to a statement released by the Texas Attorney General’s Office, who handled the case after the Bastrop County District Attorney’s Office recused itself.
After the Attorney General’s Office began its investigation, a second student – the underage brother of another one of Reyes’s students – reported to investigators that he had been sexually victimized by Reyes, according to the statement.
A Bastrop County grand jury issued two indictments against Reyes in April 2013 on charges of sexually assaulting the two minors. Reyes pleaded guilty to both indictments Thursday and received a 15-year sentence for each. The sentences will run concurrently, according to the statement.
The Bastrop Advertiser initally reported in August 2012 that Reyes had been allegedly sexually assualting the first victim, who was 17 at the time, since he was 12, according to an affidavit provided by the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office. The affidavit stated the victim had told authorities that over the years Reyes had given him cars, a motorcycle, an X-Box and money.
