More than a dozen burglars ran into a southwest Atlanta shoe store after ramming a stolen car through the front of the business early Monday, police said.
According to Atlanta police Sgt. Greg Lyon, the thieves backed a Dodge Intrepid through the front doors of the Foot Locker store in the 2600 block of Metropolitan Parkway just before 3 a.m.
The vehicle damaged a brick wall in front of the store, as well as the front glass and burglar screens.
Lyon said that security video showed approximately 15 suspects entering the store and began stealing shoes and clothing before making a getaway in what investigators believe was a dark red Chevrolet pickup truck.
The Intrepid, which had been reported stolen out of Clayton County, was found abandoned in the parking lot of the store.
Just before daybreak Monday, Jonathan Colin of Atlanta’s Professional Door arrived to repair the front of the store.
Colin said that just last week, he repaired another Foot Locker on Memorial Drive after burglars drove a vehicle through the front doors of that store.
LeGrand Blackwell also stopped by the crime scene Monday morning.
“I could solve this problem,” said Blackwell, who owns Blackwell Welding.
“You put pipes in front of the building, every four or five feet apart,” Blackwell said.
“The cars can’t go through it once you put the pipes in the ground,” he said. “You put them about four feet down in the ground and four feet up and they’ll tear the car up or someone will get hurt in the car.”
