A risk of flooding continues across much of northern and eastern Georgia through Sunday, and residents not under the watch should still be on the lookout in low-lying areas.
On Saturday, the National Weather Service had updated its flash flood watch to include 52 Georgia counties through Sunday evening.
Gordon and Cherokee counties were added to the watch, which still includes Gwinnett, Walton, Morgan, Putnam and counties northward and eastward, said Channel 2 Meteorologist Katie Walls.
Heading into Sunday, 2 to 6 inches of rain are expected, with the heaviest in northeast Georgia, said Walls. Big Creek near Cumming and Alpharetta has been placed under a flash flood warning until late Sunday night.
“While Fulton isn’t technically in the watch, North Fulton residents need to keep a close eye on low-lying areas,” said Walls. Drivers should be particularly careful about driving through flooded roads at night, she added.
Fans at the UGA game in Athens appeared to be spared from heavy rain Saturday early in the game. Heavy rain wasn’t expected until later Saturday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.
Sunday will remain wet and dreary, with the heaviest rain expected in the morning through the early afternoon, Monahan said. A flash flood watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday.
Though the rain will likely taper off by then, intermittent showers are forecast through Monday.
The outlook for next week is considerably brighter. Sunny skies will return Tuesday along with highs in the mid-to-upper 70s.
