Flooding in metro Atlanta

Heavy rain in metro Atlanta caused flooding in several areas on Monday, September 21, 2009.

A home in the 2400 block of Brooks Drive in Austell is submerged in flood water Monday. Most of metro Atlanta was under a flash flood warning Monday morning after a foot or more of rain flooded homes, businesses and roadways. Emergency personnel in at least two counties were busy rescuing residents from high water before daybreak Monday.

Fran Alexay of West Creek Stables at 2451 Perkerson Mills in Austell moves a Welsh Pony into a nearby trailer as she and her other stable hands moved 15 of their 33 horses to the Conyers Horse Park Monday as Sweetwater Creek threatened their stables.

This is flooding at the corner of Hanover West and Bohler Road in Northwest Atlanta. it's right out the front gate of the Cross Creek Condo Association. The water is coming from Peachtree Creek.

Dean Trevelino, 45, who lives in Atlanta right behind Peachtree Creek, stands in flooded water from the creek up to his knees Monday. Trevelino says that five years ago this week the waters rose to this level due to Hurricane Ivan.

"This isn't a hurricane, this is just rain, so in my mind, we've got to do some work on the creek," Dean Trevelino said. "This one totally blinded us."

Braswell is in town to take care of the Passarella children and she says when she tried to take them to school today, the road to the MARTA station was flooded.

A resident's Mercedes is submerged in water outside their home from a flooded Peachtree Creek on Woodward Way at the intersection of Northside Drive in Atlanta.

Cathrine Nelke, 43, walks through the main level of her home past her basement that is flooding due to an overflowing Peachtree Creek and a broken water main on Woodward Way in Atlanta. Eventually, a neighbor stopped the water from the broken main from rushing into her home.

Jullian Phillips, 42, a resident whose mother lives on Sagamore Drive, helps neighbor Cathrine Nelke, 43, whose water main broke on top of the flooding from nearby Peachtree Creek on Woodward Way. "We haven't had a flood like this since this since Hurricane Ivan ... because we've been in a drought. We kinda got spoiled," Phillips said. "Now everything in the basement is under five feet of water."

The flooding of Peachtree Creek also affected the grounds of Atlanta's Bobby Jones Golf Course on Northside Drive.

Flood waters rush under a bridge across Deshong Road near the Waters Edge subdivision in Stone Mountain Monday morning after a creek overflowed its banks. Flooding also affected several homes in the Deer Creek subdivision on Bermuda Road.

The basement of the house at 634 Deer Lake Trail in the Deer Creek subdivision in Stone Mountain was flooded, along with several other neighboring houses.

Torrential rains led to a mudslide across Ga. 78 near Hugh Howell Road on Monday morning.

Cleanup was in progress on southbound at Hwy 78. Mudslides slowed traffic across both north and south bound lanes Monday.
